Medvedev's retrieving play style and frequent reactions on the playing surface had prompted observers to doubt if his capacity to perform at the elite level was finished.

Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and perform assertively, backed up by an better serving game.

The champion came back from a break down in the opening set against the challenging Moutet, winning 4 of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.

The competitors swapped break points in the middle set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden tour title, took control to push for a decider.

He rescued 4 early-game chances in a competitive final set before the champion won the break to 15 to secure the win.
