This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
